JibJab meets Star Wars

This week one of our portfolio companies JibJab announced that in honor of the 30th anniversary of the release of The Empire Strikes Back, the site has secured the rights to re-create the original Star Wars Trilogy.  Except instead of the familiar faces of Han, Luke, and Leia, you’ll be watching your friends take on the Empire.   This is just one more really creative and innovative product decision by Gregg and Evan Spridellis.

JibJab is a great case study of a company with founders who have the brains, creativity and judgment that has enabled them to iterate on their business model to find the best way to marry their creative skills with market demand and opportunity.   When we first invested in JibJab the business model was all about building an audience and monetizing by selling ads.  They had great original content but realized that being in the CPM business was not the most efficient use of their skills.  The decision was made to move to an ecommerce model and create the most innovative ecards business.   This has been a huge success.  Consumers love the “starring you” functionality and the revenue model works.

If you haven’t signed up…you should.  After all mother’s day is this weekend!
